Sure, the 2024 kits are slick and they’ve got that EUROs vibe, honouring the greats who’ve played before. But come on, nothing beats the charm of a classic jersey, right?
Think about it – those game-changing moments that turned underdogs into champions, the players who stood tall when the pressure was on, and the electric connection between players and fans during those epic moments.
Each shirt isn’t just a piece of fabric, it’s a chapter in the team’s story, a symbol of the bond between the team and its fans.
So, let’s not wait any longer, let’s check out these iconic shirts!
#10. Sweden Home (’92)
Kicking off our list at number 10, after much deliberation, is the iconic Sweden Home Shirt from 1992.
This shirt was first introduced to the world stage when Sweden, as the host nation, made their debut at the European Championships. It hails from a time fondly remembered by many football fans as the “adidas Equipment era”, an era of adi-excellence.
This was a time when designers dared to think outside the box, putting a fresh spin on traditional designs that had previously dominated the football pitches.
The shirt features the expected yellow and blue of Sweden, but with a unique twist. The blue was incorporated into the adi three-stripes, prominently displayed on the right shoulder, and an iconic collar added a touch of class.
When reflecting on this remarkable piece of history, Tomas Brolin is often the first name that comes to mind. His performance against England, particularly his breakthrough goal in the final group game, is one of his most memorable moments.
This goal not only ended England’s Euro campaign but also propelled Sweden into the semi-finals. This shirt, therefore, symbolizes a pivotal moment in football history.
#9. Scotland Home (’96)
Let’s be honest, few kit suppliers have mastered the tartan theme as effectively as Umbro.
While we do have the more recent adidas kits, there’s something truly timeless about the ’96 shirt. And no, it’s not because Scotland didn’t advance past the group stages, or because they failed to defeat England at Wembley (no surprise there!).
This kit perfectly encapsulated the Scottish culture without being overly extravagant. It incorporated an ideal blend of dark navy blues and royal purples, complemented by yellow detailing on the cuffs that simply hit the mark.
But let’s remember, we’re discussing the best shirts here, not the best performances!
#8. Belgium Home (’84)
You don’t get any more ’80s than this…
The Belgium Home Shirt of 1984 stirred mixed emotions at the time, but in hindsight, it undeniably deserves its 8th place in our EURO shirt lineup.
Although Belgium’s success was short-lived, with their crushing defeat by France in the group stage, the shirt itself remains a fond memory.
Its diamond pattern embraced Belgium’s home colours, blending deep reds with striking yellows and bold blacks for an unmistakably clean finish.
Emphasizing its iconic status, this shirt even inspired Belgium’s 2018 World Cup strip.
While the 2018 version was a commendable attempt at replicating an icon, it didn’t quite capture the original charm of the ‘84 Home Shirt.
Safe to say, this shirt continues to be a favourite among fans!
#7. Croatia Home (’96)
You can’t help but love the timeless allure of a checkerboard pattern!
When it comes to the Croatian national team’s 1996 design, that red and white checkered shirt is a visual masterpiece.
The Lotto badge and Croatian Team Crest play their part too, sitting harmoniously on those squares. And the player’s number, centered smack in the middle, adds to the clean, no-nonsense look.
But this jersey isn’t just fabric and stitches—it’s a piece of history. The UEFA European Championship of 1996 marked Croatia’s debut on the big stage. Fans worldwide were captivated as they watched this newly independent nation reach the quarter-finals—a remarkable achievement.
And who could forget that pivotal moment? Davor Šuker’s goal against Denmark, knocking out the defending champions during the group stage. It’s these sensational bits of history that make a flawless shirt even more special!
#6. Spain (’00)
For those with a memory of the year 2000, it was a time of heightened anticipation for Spain.
They were considered strong contenders for the title, with Fernando Hierro leading the team and the remarkable Raúl playing every minute of Spain’s EURO 2000 finals campaign in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Among the unforgettable moments was Spain’s thrilling victory over FR Yugoslavia. The team needed a win to advance, and despite being down 3-2 in the 75th minute after Slobodan Komljenović’s goal, Spain’s Gaizka Mendieta and Alfonso Perez stepped up their game, securing a 4-3 victory for Spain.
Although Spain was eventually eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 loss to France, their home jersey from the tournament remains etched in our memories.
The design of the jersey was more than just an incorporation of the colours of the Spanish National Flag. Each colour separation was thoughtfully considered to create a statement that was as audacious as it was captivating.
The jersey featured yellow striping on the shoulders, offset by deep blacks that also appeared on the collar and partially on the sleeves. The front was dominated by red and yellow, from the player’s number to the adidas logo and even the seams. adidas went above and beyond to create what we believe is one of the most iconic jerseys of all time.
#5. England Home (’96)
Ah, the nostalgia is as palpable as ever!
Who could possibly erase from memory the golden year of ’96? It was then that England, in a stunning display of skill and strategy, trounced the favourites, the Netherlands, with a resounding 4-1 victory in the group stage. This match has since been etched in history as one of the most iconic tournament performances.
And who could forget the sensational goal by England’s own Paul Gascoigne? In a move that left spectators and opponents alike in awe, Gascoigne lobbed the ball over Colin Hendry before executing a flawless volley past the keeper. This goal has been immortalised as one of the tournament’s most iconic moments.
This shirt, embodying the spirit of England, has become an enduring symbol. Even Southgate’s penalty miss in the semi-final against Germany couldn’t tarnish its iconic status.
After all, what’s not to love? The prominent central crest adorned with the famed three lions, the pristine white of the home shirt contrasted with the striking turquoise/navy trims – it’s an undisputed classic!
#4. Italy Home (’00)
Lots of folks reckon this is one of the luckiest jerseys ever made (that’s if you’re into the whole luck thing!). The story of Italy switching to their white strip for the first time in the EURO 2000 final against France is a real page-turner.
Despite giving it their all, Italy ended up on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline. If this yarn doesn’t make you a believer in the magic of a lucky shirt, well, I don’t know what will…
The Italy Home shirt is simple but snazzy. It ditched the wild 90s designs that were all over the place and went for a sleek look that’s a total classic.
The shirt keeps it low-key, with just the badge crest, numbers, and “Kappa” logo on the sleeves. You don’t have to be a footie nut to see that Kappa totally aced this shirt’s design. It’ll always have fans wondering about the “what ifs” if they’d never switched to their white strip.
We can only daydream, right?
#3. France Home (’84)
Modern-day home shirts simply can’t compare…
Especially when we consider France and their iconic home shirt from 1984. This was a year of triumph for France, as they not only hosted but also emerged victorious in the final against Spain.
The match concluded with a score of 2-0 in favor of France, a victory made possible by the intricate footwork of Michel Platini and Bruno Bellone that saw in their first major international tournament win.
The 1984 France Home Shirt was a masterpiece in design. It boasted a V-neck collar and an oversized France badge, elements that have been revived by Nike for their 2024 design. The ’84 shirt was a perfect blend of style and symbolism, with adidas incorporating their signature three stripes on the shoulder in France’s home colours.
In comparison, modern-day home shirts may seem less captivating. But each era has its charm, and each shirt tells a story of its time. The evolution of football jerseys is a reflection of the changing times, yet the iconic designs like the 1984 France Home Shirt will always hold a special place in football history.
#2. West Germany Home (’88)
When West Germany hosted the 1988 EURO, they showed up in style… It was their last Home Kit before the Berlin Wall fell and East and West Germany reunited on October 3rd, 1990. The West Germany Home Shirt of 1988 was a big deal, so much so that it was worn at the 1990 World Cup!
adidas nailed it by using the colours of the German flag in a cool design with jagged edges and diamond patterns that were fittingly 80s. The adi logo and team crest were perfectly placed, making it a hit.
Even though they lost to the Netherlands in the Semi-Final 2-1, West Germany’s performance made a mark in football history.
It got even better when they won their third World Cup just 2 years later in Rome, beating the defending champions, Argentina, 1-0 in the final. What a ride!
#1.Netherlands Home (’88)
The moment of truth has arrived.
Claiming the prestigious title of the “Most Iconic Euro Football Jersey of All Time” is none other than the Netherlands Home Shirt, showcased in the 1988 European Championship.
This jersey, with its history woven into every fiber, presents a psychedelic yet minimalist aesthetic. Its striking geometric design features brilliant white accents set against a vibrant backdrop of orange zest, creating a visually impactful yet understated look.
This shirt holds a special place in football history. The Netherlands team wore it during their triumphant 2-0 victory over the Soviet Union in the final match.
This victory marked the Netherlands’ first major title, a moment made even more memorable by one of the greatest players of all time, Marco van Basten.
His extraordinary volley not only secured the win but also etched itself into the annals of football history as one of the greatest goals ever scored.
