The Meteoric Rise of Major League Soccer’s Popularity
As the curtain rises on the new season, select Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs are once again stepping into the spotlight with their Third Shirts.
This honor, previously bestowed upon pioneers like Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls, New York City, and Atlanta, marks a significant milestone in the league. Now, adidas is back, infusing fresh energy into the new season and extending this prestigious tradition to more clubs.
The brand is broadening its horizons by welcoming five more clubs into its prestigious fold.LA Galaxy, Sporting Kansas City, Portland Timbers, Los Angeles FC, and Inter Miami are the latest recipients of this esteemed accolade.
However, a question lingers in the air – why aren’t more teams being graced with their Third Shirt?
Rumors are swirling that MLS clubs need to hit a certain sales target (believed to be around 100,000 kits) to earn their bespoke kit designs.
The MLS has been catapulted into the global spotlight, arguably due to the arrival of Argentine Forward Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, under the guidance of former England striker, David Beckham.
This move has stirred up a whirlwind of interest, drawing in more fans and followers than ever before.
After all, it’s only natural for the world to be captivated when the player many consider to be the greatest footballer of all time joins the fray!
#1. LA Galaxy Third
Emerging from the archives, the Third Shirt of LA Galaxy is a tribute to the original jersey sported in the inaugural MLS season of 1996.
This daring design boldly incorporates a split of black and dark green (virdia), creating a half-and-half pattern. The split is bridged by a constellation of stars that embellish each half, with an additional five stars gracing the inner collar.
These five stars are a commemoration of their MLS cup triumphs in 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, and 2014.
The shirt is further enhanced by red stripes cascading down the shoulders, harmonizing with a red v-neck, adi-logo, sleeves, and hem. It’s undeniable that LA Galaxy’s Third Shirt delivers a powerful statement.
The front of the shirt is emblazoned with “Los Angeles Galaxy” in gold lettering, a detail that is truly stellar – or should we say, “galactic”?
#2. Sporting Kansas City
Next in line is Sporting Kansas City, which has arguably been bestowed one of the most pristine Third Shirts in the MLS 2024 collection.
This shirt is a tribute to the rainbow kits worn by the Wizards in the 1990s. adidas has reimagined this classic design for 2024, infusing it with a fresh interpretation.
The sleek aesthetic integrates a multicolour graphic, creating a seamless transition between a captivating sky blue and a brilliant white. The design is further enhanced by black stripes gracing the sleeves and cuffs.
It’s safe to say that the Sporting Kansas City Third Shirt, adidas has truly knocked the retro vibe out of the park.
#3. Portland Timbers Third
Sometimes “less is more”, and that’s certainly the case with Portland Timbers’s Third Shirt.
This shirt pays homage to Clive Charles, a figure revered for his remarkable contributions to the Portland Timbers, both as a player and a coach. His achievements are impressive, with 13 conference titles, 20 NCAA tournament berths, and 7 NCAA Final Four appearances to his name, along with a plethora of other accolades.
His undeniable contributions have propelled the club to become a significant fixture in Oregon’s youth soccer scene.
In recognition of Charles’s impact, the jersey sports a unique “Victory Crimson” colourway as its primary hue. This is complemented by golden yellow lettering and the adidas logo, creating a striking contrast. The shirt also features a white collar and cuffs, accented with a touch of green and yellow on the trim.
Adding to the understated elegance of the design, the iconic adidas three-stripes in black adorn the shoulders. This subtle detail rounds off the aesthetic, resulting in a look that is both sophisticated and polished.
#4. LAFC Third Shirt
This piece is as retro as it gets!
Taking a leaf out of the 1970s Southern California (SoCal) art scene, artists of the time were pushing boundaries, seeking fresh forms of expression. This led to a vibrant array of SoCal iconography that struck a chord with many.
Fast forward to the second half of 2024, and adidas has breathed new life into this art form with their eye-catching LAFC Third Shirt.
The shirt sports a vintage brown colour scheme against an off-white base, creating a striking contrast. The design is further enhanced with brown/golden three stripes and a unique brown/brown-golden/mustard chest stripe.
One thing’s for certain, adidas has truly hit the nail on the head with the retro vibe in this jersey!
#5. Inter Miami Third Shirt
Introducing Inter Miami’s latest Third Shirt for 2024, a unique blend of aqua turquoise that takes its cue from Miami’s beach palms.
The shirt is tastefully accented with contrasting pops of orange and white on the sleeves, collars, and cuffs, offering a refreshing and undeniably minty twist.
adidas has skillfully crafted a timeless and tasteful vintage makeover of the Inter Miami strip, which is nothing short of compelling.
Keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks, as none other than Lionel Messi himself is expected to sport this very shirt!
