Why take it?
Anyone who trains hard or plays sport will know about the problem of muscle fatigue when exercising at a high intensity. The reason for this painful fatigue is that muscle contractions result in the generation of acidic toxins (most notably hydrogen ions and lactic acid), which make it physiologically impossible to maintain maximal effort for longer than 10-20 seconds. Simply put, overly acidic muscles are unable to contract powerfully! This includes activities such as lifting a heavy weight for 10-12 repetitions, or performing a succession of sprints during sport. When your body senses an acidic pH in muscles, it releases alkaline substances in an attempt to 'buffer' the acid and combat fatigue. This includes a substance called carnosine, which is thought to be responsible for up to 40% of the buffering capacity of muscles. However, because stores of this nutrient are limited, you are eventually forced to reduce your exercise intensity once the nutrient has been depleted and muscle fatigue becomes overpowering. Fortunately, by supplementing the compound beta-alanine that your body uses to create carnosine, you are able to increase carnosine muscle concentrations and as a result resist fatigue for longer and enhance the amount of muscular work that can be performed during maximal exercise.
Taking Beta-alanine is a more effective way of increasing levels of carnosine than supplementing with the nutrient itself, because the acidic environment in the stomach destroys the carnosine compound when consumed orally. In contrast, Beta-alanine is efficiently absorbed when digested, then used to generate carnosine.
