Green tea along with black and oolong tea all come from the Camellia Sinensis plant. The three differ in the way that they are prepared once picked. Black tea is fully fermented, oolong tea undergoes partial fermentation and green tea is simply steamed, baked or heated with no fermentation. As a result, the active ingredients within the tea leaves remain undamaged and complete in the finished green tea product.
The active ingredients that we are concerned with are "catechins", a form of antioxidant. Green tea contains a catechin called epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG), which as well as having many health benefits has been shown to promote fat loss.
In addition to antioxidants, green tea also contains caffeine and a variety vitamins including C, E and various forms of B.
Smart Green Tea Extract is a tablet that contains concentrated, effective amounts of the beneficial ingredients found in green tea. This enables you to conveniently consume optimum levels of these nutrients to maximise the associated benefits. Why take it?Antioxidants
Although we are sure that you are familiar with the term antioxidant, it is worth explaining what they do. When your cells use oxygen, a small percentage of them can become damaged and form "free radicals". These pests can then go on to damage other cells and eventually lead to disease including cancer & heart disease. Fortunately, antioxidants kill free radicals, helping us to keep our cells healthy.Fat loss
Your body contains a hormone called norepinephrine that is responsible for burning fat as fuel. Unfortunately, an enzyme called catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) breaks down this hormone. This is not an ideal situation for the body conscious amongst us who do everything we can to stay lean. Fortunately, catechins such as EGCG inhibit COMT from breaking down our fat burning hormones, which in turn helps promote the use of body fat as fuel.
Green Tea also contains caffeine which has been shown to boost lipolysis; the process your body uses to break down fat. So there is another big tick in the lean definition box.
Studies also suggest that there is a synergistic interaction between the EGCG and caffeine within green tea that increases our metabolic rate; a measure of how many calories we burn at restWhen to take it?
Green tea extract can be taken with or without food, however, studies have shown that it's benefits can be maximised when taken alongside quercetin or fish oil. Quercetin is an ingredient found in many foods such as sweet potato, broccoli, red onions and apples. Fish oils can be taken in supplement form (see Smart Omegas) or sourced from oily fish such as mackerel and salmon.
